Elene Akhvlediani




Elene Akhvlediani started her works in the early decades of the twentieth century. Her canvas reflects emotions, love and character of the artist, who devoted herself to art and let her work become her private life.

Akhvlediani was born in Kakheti, Georgia in 1901, where she started to paint and followed her childhood passion in the Art Academy of Tbilisi. As Elene spent her childhood in Kakheti, these years are reflected on her paintings.

From the academy she was sent to Paris, France, where she stayed for five years. Elene expressed her feelings also in the theatre as she worked for years as a stage painter in Tbilisi Opera and Ballet theatre, And during her life she designed more than 70 stages in Georgia and also in abroad.

In Vera district of old Tbilisi is located Akhvlediani's house-museum, established a year later after artist's death. The museum remained a place where Elene had a dwelling place and also a studio for painting.

The house is full of paintings and canvas, also copper cervices, carpets and ceramics can attract the visitor’s attention. In the largest room of the museum stands a grand piano, where often used to hold concerts. And the famous German artist Sviatoslav Richter who was artist's friend used to play the grand piano in the room.

Nowadays the house museum remains one of the main cultural centers, were often are hold poetry evenings.

Georgian Blue Gallery that is the largest one in Tbilisi, is often a host of Akhvlediani's paintings, where the visitors have an opportunity to see and observe artists works.

In the old Tbilisi there is located a building that has name of Elene Akhvlediani. And is known as “children art gallery,” There are about 20 000 exhibits in the gallery painted and made by young artists.

Elene Akhvlediani died in 1975 at the age of 74, by that time she created more than 1000 paintings. As the artist loved to gift her works to her friends, only small amount of paintings are left in the house-museum. Elene stayed one of the favorite artists for Georgian people, known as a painter of beautiful landscapes...
